Kihnu Island in the Baltic

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Kihnu lies 12 km (7 mi) off the coast of Estonia and is the largest of more than a dozen islands in the reefs and shallows of the Gulf of Riga. It is 16 sq km (6 sq mi) in area with a low ridge running down the middle and only 9 m (30 ft) above sea level at its highest point.

The island farmsteads are enclosed by forest, which prevents soil erosion as well as protecting the islanders from the bitter northeast winds.

Huge broadleaf trees stand like sentinels in the coastal meadowlands that lead to a 36 km (22 mi) long shoreline of dunes and shifting sands where the scent of juniper is everywhere in the air. The island is a nesting place for hundreds of bird species and the coastal reef is home to the last grey seal colony in the Baltic.

The first historical documents relating to Kihnu date from the late 14th century but excavations show that the island was inhabited, at least during the summer months, from around 1500 BC.

It has at various times been under Danish, Swedish, Estonian, Polish and Russian rule, reflecting the turbulent history of the Baltic.

Since time immemorial the men here have been seafarers and fishermen, skilled at woodwork and shipbuilding, while the women are wholly responsible for working the land and keeping alive the rich island culture of music, dance and poetry.

A trip to Kihnu transports you back in time into a fascinating folk culture. The inhabitants speak their own language and wear traditional homespun costume. Each woman makes her family’s clothes with intricately knitted, woven and embroidered patterns symbolising ancient legends.

The islanders are symbiotically bound up with their harsh environment, their survival entirely dependent upon cultural loyalty and community sharing. Against all odds, they have managed to hang onto their heritage at the same time as welcoming strangers to their shores.

Barco scores with their PACS workstation for mamography

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

PACS workstation for browsing and reconstruction of the images off-line. By using the PACS workstation for image reconstruction, the ultrasound system can now be used strictly for image acquisition, allowing for more efficient use of the modality and shortening patient wait time in the department. PACS monitors are configured accordant to customer preference with only recent high quality components. Equipped with Dual-XEON processors, special graphic boards , RAID systems (S-ATA or SCSI), and adequate main storage, our PACS workstations also cope with very computing and data intensive applications.

Medical imaging specialist Barco monitors has scored a new success with its innovative Coronis Fusion 6MP DL solution, the world’s first diagnostic display system featuring a 6 MegaPixel 30-inch screen. The company has landed a significant deal from GE Healthcare, Australia, to deliver a large number of multi-modality 6MP display systems, along with several other PACS displays, to five hospitals in New South Wales, Australia. Medical device manufacturers have an even more specific duty to understand the complaints of their users. A glitch in this realm has the potential to kill, and that is not an exaggeration.

Images do not have to be stored locally, but the queried server must know the target server’s DICOM properties. In local mode (table color is green) a c-Send request will be sent to the target server. Images are available using a VPN and medical lcd monitor to connect to the LAN and then connect to web server. Unlimited web viewer licenses for referring physicians. Images and explanatory text are accessible to radiologists and clinicians alike, both on the hospital campus and from home (via VPN). Results and Conclusions: To our knowledge and in published opinions, there is no enterprise wide PACS system which offers an integrated DTF system or one that performs adequately to create, archive and allow access across a multifacilty teaching environment.

Our iPod Video and DVD Quandary

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

My wife just bought a high priced iPod Touch for her personal gift. She received one with a caboodle of space capable of holding all her songs, photographs and even many of her precious films. She was initially really thrilled about the video benefit, but was subsequently disappointed when she figured out that iTunes did not provide a means to rip DVDs to the iPod device.

She came to me and stated she was going to have to re-purchase all of our movies from iTunes in the proper data formatting for iPod playback. I felt that was ridiculous, we already paid more than a thousand dollars on our movie collection. I assured her I would research a way to get our existing films on her new iPod.

I began exploring using Google and eventually located a handful of highly graded computer programs made specifically to rip DVD to iPod data formatting. These computer programs were called iPod DVD Converter software package. I read umpteen consumer review articles and finally settled on the Avex DVD to iPod Converter. It was obviously the preferred program when it came to the DVD to iPod reviews.

I liked it because it came with a no cost demo version. I tried it out with a video and was flabbergasted how simple it was to use and the high quality of the outputted picture and sound recording. Buying it was a simple choice. I went onward and paid the full price, which was just a paltry $30. It was a huge savings equated to the thought of having to buy each movie we already held once again!

Subsequently I purchased it, I spent a few seconds teaching my wife how to use it. She is not the most PC savvy soul, but she was easily effective to use the package. If she can do it, I have no question anyone can (just do not let her know that I pronounced that!).

Next time I will tell you about my cell phone problem.  What we need are cell phones with two sim card slots to be able to handle mutliple carriers.

Smart Marketing With Visitor Maps and Real-time Blog Traffic Feeds

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

It is the same for all websites and blogs: You need traffic to the site. Without traffic nobody will learn about what you have to offer of goodies at your website or blog. Feedjit is the smartest and most simple innovation I know of to help you get more visitors to your site at present. And Feedjit is a fun experience for your visitors, too. Did I forgot to tell you that Feedjit is free? Feedjit will appear at your blog or site when you add a small snippet of code to each of your web pages.

Show the real-time traffic stream

From a list of visitors displayed as a live traffic feed you can go to a webpage of Feedjit with a list of your visitors: Where they are coming from and where they are going in real-time. This is really amazing to see. See Feedjit in function live here about stock photo search Again, as this list is on the Feedjit website it is at the same time giving you links back to your site and in that way enhancing your position in the search engines like Google, see http://live.feedjit.com/live/jubiii.com/

The world map of Feedjit

The most fun thing to add is a small world map. On this world map small red dots will show from where your visitors are coming from the latest 24 hours. The map will show up to 100 dots, not to cover the whole map. This is in itself a nice addition to the visitor experience to your site as the map will function as a kind of testimonial about that you get a lot of visitors from all around the world. See Feedjit in function: The Feedjit world map of visitors to Island Vacation Tips. When visitors click on this small map widget they will go to a web page at Feedjit with an interactive map with flags. The flags show the location in each country from where your latest visitors are coming from. This map is really looking impressive and will take up to 1000 visitor locations. The visitor can move around on the map and also use its zoom function. The beauty of this world map from a marketing aspect is that on the map a small window is showing the most popular of your web pages with links. In other words this big world map url will provide you with dynamic links back to individual web pages of your site. This should help you quite a lot for your ranking in Google and other search engines At the same time this list will invite your visitors to click on other pages at your site. All in all a fine visitor experience and a good marketing help for your site or blog.

Most popular pages today – list

Another snippet is listing the 10 most popular pages of your site today. Again this is just a small code to install, and placed in your menu it will invite visitors to click on more of your pages.

Installation of the Feedjit snippets

The installation of these Feedjit snippets is very simple on a blog. There are special easy install on Blogger but else you just cut and paste the small script into your blog template or website HTML (should be on each page). In a WordPress blog the easiest way is to add a text blog in the Design section: Widgets. Add the text blog, save it and edit it by pasting in the relevant code for the Feedjit snippet. Then you can move this widget around to where you want it to show on your blog. Experiment for the best results.

The effect of Feedjit widgets on your website

Webmasters report an increase of time spend, number of visited pages per visitor, number of repeat visitors, and amount of earnings from 2 to 4 times. Not bad for installation of a few small codes – free.

Today’s Best Real Estate Blogs

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

These days real estate blogs are probably one of the finest places to go for local neighborhood information. In general, less than 6% of real estate professionals use blogs. Thus a good one is hard to find. Finding a high-quality local blog can be a time consuming but worthwhile effort and one of the best examples I have found is the Huntsville Real Estate Blog.

While looking through the home page of a blog you’re evaluating take a good look at the category menu sometimes found in a drop down menu in the website’s header. The first category to take a look at will be the market conditions archive, as these posts will give you a good feel for the quality of the local authors and this category can generally be found on almost all local real estate blogs. To illustrate the information you are likely to find, investigate the Huntsville AL Real Estate Market collection of articles as one example.

An additional set of articles to evaluate are the subdivision or neighborhood archive. Here you should find a variety of neighborhood articles, restaurant reviews, and school zone assignments. A great example collection of these types of articles can be found within the Huntsville Alabama Neighborhoods section of the previously mentioned website.
